New PS3 Firmware Update Is Mandatory

It’s been about a month since the last firmware updtae, 3.40, for the PS3. Now the newest version, 3.41, is available and just like the last, it is mandatory. In order to continue using the Playstation Network and accessing the Playstation Store, you must download this update.

We haven’t confirmed this, but buzz around the office is that this new update is in response to a widely-used jailbreak tool, which is supposed to enable piracy on the system. Sony hasn’t provided any comments about this as of yet, but if and when they do we will be sure to update.

[Update:] The BBC has reported that this update does in fact block the PSJailbreak and PSGroove hacks. A Sony representative stated on the matter, “Since this is an overall security related issue, we will not be providing any further commentary to this case. But as we always have, we will continue to take necessary actions to both hardware and software to protech the intellectual content provided by the Plsyataion 3.”
