Yes readers, it’s true! Valve has just announced Dota 2, which they claim is the “massive sequel for one of the most played games in the world.” The short press release didn’t reveal too many details, other than the fact that the game will release in 2011 for Mac and PC.
Now you’ll notice that the spelling of the title has changed from the original DotA, and the mention of the game’s actual name, Defense of the Ancients, wasn’t mentioned in the press release. Earlier this year Valve filed a trademark application for the DotA trademark, and one of the game’s original creators, Steve Mescon, told press that he is “surprised that [Valve has] decided to try and trademark the DotA name, because it goes against what [he] and others believe DotA means to the community.”
Riot Games, which is where DotA originally came from, filed a counter-trademark for the DotA trademark, saying that they were trying “to protect the work that Eul, Guinsoo, and dozens of other modders have done to create the game,” and added that, “if we were to obtain the trademark, we would keep the game and the DotA name freely available to the mod community.”
Now I don’t necessarily know what is happening at this point in the debate, but Valve, it seems, is pressing forward with this release. Either way it goes, I am looking forward to it. In the meantime, check out this awesome retro-esque video of Basshunter’s DotA. Be sure o grab your glow sticks
