More Skyrim Details, Along With A New Screen

From Game Informer comes yet more information on the newest title in the Elder Scrolls series, featuring the technology behind the upcoming RPG. This time around the game will use Bethesda’s new Creation engine which will replace the old Gamebryo engine used in Fallout 3 and Oblivion. Bethesda took much time and sat down to rework “every major system” for the new Creation engine, improving draw distances, lighting, shadow effects, foliage effects, and much more.

Speaking of foliage, Skyrim will feature an overhauled foliage system, as artists can now manipulate the animation properties of trees, which will allow them to whip around in the wind. A new precipitation system will simulate realistic snowfall, because we all know you can’t have a medieval RPG without snow, and, according to Bethesda, snow is something you’re going to see plenty of with Skyrim.

The new title utilizes a new “Radiant Story” quest system, allowing for the personalization of side quests for each individual player. Instead of offering a pre-decided list of quests to a player, the game will be able to craft quests to suit each player based on where they are, which characters they’ve met, and what skillsets they have.

Character animations and interactions have been worked on as well. For those who played Oblivion, you will be happy to know that the game will no longer freeze when character dialogue has begun. Rather than switching to a closeup one-on-one view of the characters, the camera angle stays maintained as the characters interact. Some characters may remain performing duties, such as a bartender cleaning the bar, or a farmhand tending to crops while still conversing with the player. It brings a new sense of realness to the game that I think many players were looking for.

Above is the first screen from Skyrim, as released by Game Informer. What do you think? If you would like to find out more behind-the-scenes tech information about the game, be sure to check out the newest article at Game Informer.
