Last week we showed you footage of Battlefield 3 on the PS3. Since I’ve already had the chance to play the game on a PC, I was a bit disappointed in the quality that I was seeing in the video. As it turns out, there is good reason for my disappointment.
One of the reasons that I tend to play games on my PC is that I love my keyboard and mouse. However, the other large factor is that I know that the graphics are going to look much better, as I’m using superior hardware. So on a technical level, what are we going to be seeing with Battlefield 3? If you play on a console, you will be seeing a resolution of 720p and a framerate of 30fps.
From a PC gaming perspective, that’s perfectly playable, but far from what I want to be playing at. What this shows is that the current-generation of consoles are really starting to show their age. While adding motion controls are a nice way to add new functionality, developers like DICE are running up against hardware limitations that can’t be fixed with a Kinect.
