Codemasters Takes Down GRID PS3 And PC Servers

Fans of the 2008 racing title GRID will be rather disappointed the next time they log on to play a match online. Well, at least the PS3 and PC players will be. Codemasters has announced that they have taken the servers offline for both of the previously-mentioned platforms.

The official statement from the company is that “this follows the decision by a third party provider to decline the offer of an extended contract to continue online play on these platforms.” What is interesting is that Xbox 360 owners will still find that the servers for their console remain online.

This announcement shows exactly what is broken in today’s online gaming experience. While having dedicated servers for your online titles is the preferred option, developers should be working on a way to switch over to a peer-to-peer method of play. Thus, when it is no longer a smart idea to keep the dedicated servers online, the people who still enjoy the online experience won’t be left out in the cold.
