Battlefield 3 Won’t Display In Full HD On Consoles

I often get asked which gaming platform I prefer. The answer is always PC. I could go on at length as to why I would rather play games on my computer, but a recent announcement regarding Battlefield 3 brings up my most important point. A recent tweet by DICE Rendering Architect Johan Anderson revealed that BF3 will not even be rendered in 720p on either console.

Now, I know what a lot of people will say. They will point to other popular console games (such as Modern Warfare 2) and how they aren’t technically rendered in 720p either. And that’s exactly my point. Current consoles simply don’t have the power to display games at their maximum resolution. I’m a sucker for excellent graphics, which is why I’d much rather look at a screen that is true 1080p, than something that has merely been upscaled.

Back to the original point of the article, Anderson stated that the game will display at 1280×704 on both PS3 and 360. The reasoning is much as you would expect. “Removing a few lines from 720p saves good perf & memory for us.” Like many other games that have come before it, Battlefield 3 will still look great on your consoles, it’s just going to look better on a PC.
