Prince Of Persia Source Code Found After 23 Years

Have you ever gone through some old boxes, only to find something that you thought had been lost many years before? It’s always a nice feeling, being reunited with a long lost belonging, however, you’re generally the only one that gets excited. However, if it just happens to be the source code to a very popular game you created more than two decades ago, there might be a few other people who will share in your excitement.

This is exactly what happened to Jordan Mechner, the man behind Prince of Persia. Somewhere in the course of the 23 years since he wrote the original game, he misplaced the source code. You’d think that the original code for such an important piece of code would be kept somewhere very safe. And indeed, it apparently was. It seems that the code, along with copies of POP and Karateka were stored in a box in his father’s closet. Which oddly enough is exactly where I save all of my important coding projects, as well.

Mechner is now going to begin the process of extracting the code from the old Apple ProDOS disks and updating it so that it can be read on modern computers. We can only hope that the next step after that will be releasing the source code into the wild for people to tinker with. You can follow the progress on Mechner’s personal blog here.
