According To Valve Dota 2 Will Be Free-To-Play

The almighty Gabe Newel has just announced that Dota 2, the sequel to the smash hit original Defense of the Ancients mod for Warcraft III: Frozen Throne, will be releasing soon, and best of all it will be free. There will be a sort of payment system, and it will “have some twists,” as Newell explained in a podcast.

Aside from this big piece of news there wasn’t much more to say. Though as for the payment structure, we find that it will work out a way to separate the noble players from the so-called vagabonds. Those players who are respectful and mindful will end up receiving better treatment than those who spend their time spamming chat with obscenities and degrading other players.

One notable mention Newell made clear in the podcast is that Dota 2, while already having plenty of Valve-created content, will incorporate plenty of user-generated content much like the way that Team Fortress 2 offers. This is great, as I can see it taking the game in a much more open direction. Imagining items from the store that are created by users to aid specific characters or play-styles. This could make the game very interesting.
