According to an article on IGN, it appears that the PS4, supposedly codenamed Orbis, is going to ditch the Cell technology that was developed by Sony for the PS3. Instead, it’s looking like it’s going to be using customized chips based off of AMD’s A8-3850 APU and the Radeon HD 7670 GPU.
It’s interesting to see that Sony might be going with both of those chips, as an APU in this sense is generally a CPU and GPU combined in one chip. It appears that the GPU portion of the APU will work in tandem with the HD 7670 in an asymmetrical CrossFire configuration. Now while that is all fine and dandy, I would think that using a setup like that might make the system a little harder to program for, as the programmers will need to figure out how to best utilize the setup.
The HD 7670 is actually just a rebranded HD 6670, which was released last year. Rumor has it that the next Xbox will contain an HD 6670, which means that the two console will likely be very similar in terms of raw power. In the end, what’s going to be the main difference between the two systems will likely be the name on the front of it.
