In an effort to pull through a financial mishap, Sony has just announced that they plan to cut 10,000 jobs. They are shifting their main focus to smartphones, cameras, and thankfully, gaming. Kaz Hirai explained to attendees at a press event, “As CEO, I take this very seriously. But at the same time, it strengthened my resolve to transform Sony. Employees too want to restore Sony to its former glory and beyond.”
This is why the main focus of Sony’s new resolve will be set to its personal electronics division. The company plans to concentrate their main investment and development into this area in order to revive itself. At least they plan to set special attention aside to gaming department, and it wasn’t cut out of the structure.
Sony’s TV division has lost money every year for the past eight years running, and Hirai aims to make it profitable by the fiscal year of March 2014. The company is forecasting a 8.5 trillion yen profit in overall sales through March of 2015, and they’ll be working hard to make that deadline. I’m actually curious about what Sony plans to do, and what this big change will mean for the gaming community. With the Vita just releasing this year, I don’t see Sony driving too much attention away from what gaming they’ve already invested in. Let’s hope this decision is all for the best.
