The Crysis series has left the community with mixed feelings since it originally debuted back in 2007. When Crysis 2 release in 2011, it quickly became the year’s most illegally downloaded PC game in almost no time at all. Though this clearly shows that players want the game, Crytek hasn’t been too pleased with this milestone accomplishment. With the third title coming towards us, some things have to change for the better.
Senior Creative Director Rasmus Højengaard spoke out about piracy, and what the developer plans to do with the next release. “It’s unfortunate that you don’t win any awards for most downloaded game, but yeah, obviously it’s something we’d like to address. Certainly people apparently really want to play our games, they just don’t wanna buy them. So we’ll have to do what we can, but whatever that’s gonna be is hard to say yet.”
Crysis 2 was a fun game, and I enjoyed playing through it. It does appear, however, that a general feeling among gamers is that it’s disliked. Many players were uncertain whether their system would run the game, and peg that as the single reason for piracy. Others claim that it’s a misguided faith in the game.
There’s no telling what Crytek will do to combat piracy when Crysis 3 hits retail. All we can do is hope that they go about the battle the right way instead of finding a way that punishes gamers who actually purchase the game.
