Diablo III Players Might See Some Login Problems Due To DRM

When you get home next Monday night/Tuesday morning to play your copy of Diablo III that you’ve waited in line for two plus hours to get, you may experience some lag during your login phase. Since Blizzard will require players to sign in to their Battle.net servers, users might just be seeing some delays at the game’s launch when trying to play. This, of course, will make players excited right out of the gate.

Blizzard addressed this issue, warning players:

“It’s possible we’ll need to adjust the rate at which we’re logging people in to ensure a stable experience, and if we do you may see a delay when attempting to login. Please be aware that a delay of up to 40 seconds is possible while the game attempts to connect you. If your connection doesn’t succeed in 40 seconds, you’ll be presented with an Error 37 message and asked to try again.”

This brings us to quite the issue. You see, in order to allow the in-game auctions to work for Diablo III, DRM must be implemented. For this reason, Blizzard wouldn’t decide to remove the DRM option from the game all together. This would render in-game auctions pointless, for the most part, and real money would be lost. Most players are against DRM all together and especially that which will inconvenience any player for the publisher or developer’s benefit. When looking at it, though, that’s exactly what this DRM is.

Either way, most players will be able to login on May 15th when Diablo III gets released. Just as a warning, there could be some login lag going around due to the DRM, which would result in staggering player logins a bit. Hopefully Blizzard will come up with a workaround besides staggering logins to eliminate the issue all together. Until then, we must exercise patience.
