Microsoft To Open A New London Studio

In the world of video games, London isn’t exactly known for much, besides perhaps being the site of the climax of Mass Effect 3. However, it looks like that could be changing a little bit, as Microsoft recently announced that they will be opening a new games studio in the city. This news comes just a day after announcing that they will be reducing their Vancouver-based studio.

The new studio’s mission is all about “developing successful new products and services for current and future consumers.” It’s thought that those “products and services” will be first party free-to-play titles and other casual online experiences like that, based on the job listings that have gone up for the new studio. At this point it’s not known when exactly the studio will be open and start developing new games and content.

Right now, though, the company seems to be focusing on hiring senior staff for the studio. And while I’ve said that London isn’t exactly known for being a developer’s Mecca, Microsoft isn’t the only company in town that has studios there. Rare, Lionhead, and Konami all have their own studios there already, meaning that London is already well on its way to becoming a bigger name in the gaming industry.
