Former GameStop VP Pleads Guilty To Embezzlement

When it comes to GameStop I sometimes have a bit of a strained relationship with them. After all, anytime I go in there they’re always hounding me about joining some rewards program or to pre-order some new game that I probably don’t care about. That doesn’t even take into account about how they’re basically robbing me when I go to trade in a $60 game and I’m lucky to get $20 in credit.

Well, it looks like somebody else did the robbing for once, and they’re likely to go to jail for a long time. Former vice president of corporate communications Chris Olivera pleaded guilty late last week to embezzlement that cost GameStop over $1.9 million. That’s quite a bit more money than the 40 bucks I’ve lost in the past.

Essentially, what Olivera did was he set up a fake PR agency with a fake head, and cashed the very real checks for the work he didn’t perform. Besides paying a $250,000 fine (probably on top of the $1.9 million, I’d guess), he also faces 20 years in federal prison for mail fraud. I have to wonder as to how did he think he wasn’t going to get caught?
