Back at E3 2010 Valve announced Steamworks for the PS3 version of Portal 2, which is a set of development tools that integrates community features, game updates, and many other qualities.
Using these tools, as Valve announced just recently, the PS3 version of Portal 2 will allow for cross platform play, allowing PS3 owners to play multiplayer games with PC and Mac users.
Along with the cross platform playability, PS3 users will also gain access to cloud-based save game storage, cross platform chat functionality, and a free digital copy of Portal 2 for their PC/Mac just by linking their PS3 and Steam accounts.
Gabe Newell, co-founder and President of Valve stated at E3:
“We made a promise to gamers at E3 that Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 would be the best console version of the product. Working together with Sony we have identified a set of features we believe are very compelling to gamers. We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases.”
There has been no word of these features arriving yet for the Xbox 360.
