Frank West is set to make quite the comeback in Capcom’s new addition in the Dead Rising series. The original hero returns in Dead Rising 2: Off the Record. Don’t be confused, Off the Record is not an expansion for Dead Rising 2 – it’s a full on-disc adventure. The game follows West as he enters a new version of Fortune City, fighting his own struggle against the zombie outbreak.
The game will add new features to the Dead Rising series that fans have been waiting to see, as well as bring back something that we couldn’t avoid in the first Dead Rising – the camera. Taking photographs will serve as a way of obtaining experience points in Off the Record. The camera also serves as a means through which the game is started, as a lone woman snaps photos of the horrific situation in Fortune City from a rooftop, only to be tackled by a cannibalistic neighbor. Different shots will give you different amounts of experience points, and as always, it’s humorous to take shots of zombies wearing funny masks.
Off the Record will add a checkpoint feature which is something players are sure to find pleasing. The save system in Dead Rising 2 was better than in the first game, and it has been improved upon yet again. These checkpoints will allow players to easily make it back to critical points in the game, should something critical happen during their adventure. Capcom hasn’t detailed too much more about how the checkpoint system will work, but as soon as they announce more information we will get on it.
In Off the Record we see Frank West as a victim. Just like in Dead Rising 2 players will be tasked with delivering Zombrex to an infected character, but this time the character is even closer to home. Frank himself is infected and must fight his way through the infected citizens of Fortune City to find his cure. A good thing about the new title is that Frank will inherit Chuck’s ability to create new weapons, and Capcom has stated that there will be even more weapon combinations to dispose of the infected threat than before.
So far, Dead Rising 2: Off the Record looks like it will take the new game that we’ve come to love and add more of the features that we look to see. The game is set to release later this year, and as more details rise from the grave, we will be right here to bring them to you.
