Nintendo Confirms Wii 2 For 2012, Codename Project Cafe

Lots of rumors and photos have surfaced on the net as of late dealing with Nintendo and the possibility of a new console on the horizon. This year Nintendo hit their seven-year low in profits, and the very next day this rumor was confirmed. Nintendo has, in fact, announced that they will be producing a new console to arrive sometime next year in 2012.

The financial report released from Nintendo revealed that their net profit from last year was down 66% from 2009. The current console from Nintendo, the Wii, has sat in the top seat during the console sales war for the majority of the past four years. Since the highest sale point in 2006, the year in which Wii sales totaled about 86.01 million units, Wii sales have been on a steady decline. Nintendo has released the 3DS, which allows players to play 3D games without the use of any sort of glasses. The 3DS is a handheld, and the sales have been great so far, totaling 3.61 million units sold worldwide. Nintendo says that they want to put more effort back into console gaming, in attempts to again hold the top spot.

The next console from Nintendo has been dubbed “Project Cafe,” and though it’s no longer a rumor, we still are using our imagination while trying to figure out exactly what it will be. Some think it will finally be a Nintendo creation that will open doors to the HD age, while others think it will be something completely new. Another aspect of the new console that is receiving a lot of talk is online playability. A lot of the games that released for the Wii didn’t offer online play, as they favored the use of split-screen gaming. A lot of people saw the Wii as just a party console – using it mainly for when a get-together was being thrown. The Wii does offer connection to the internet, however it is mainly for the purchase of content. There is no online hub, nor are there friend IDs to be added. This is something a lot of people want to see changed with the new console.

There still exist a lot of questions about Nintendo’s next console endeavor, and we hope to see many of these answered when the console is playable at this year’s E3. There are also a lot of expectations that are being harbored by fans which are putting the idea of said console in a tight spot. It looks like we will have to wait until E3 to get out fancies tickled, right? Do you think Nintendo has the capability to produce the next top-spot console?
