U.S. Senator Contacts Sony Over PlayStation Network Breach

Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal personally drafted a hand-written letter, and sent it to Sony in response to the immense network breach that has lead to the serious PlayStation Network outage that’s gone on for a week now. The intrusion has lead to the possibility of users’ personal information being put right into the hands of hackers worldwide. The situation has gotten extremely serious – so serious, in fact, that the letter sent from Senator Blumenthal was addressed to SCEA’s President and CEO himself, Jack Tretton. The letter puts Sony right in the forefront, asking some very tough, although necessary questions.

In the letter, Blumenthal states:

I am troubled by the failure of Sony to immediately notify affected customers of the breach and to extend adequate financial data security protections. A breach of such a widely used service raises concerns of data privacy, identity theft, and other misuse of sensitive personal and financial data. When a data breach occurs, it is essential that customers be immediately notified about whether and to what extent their personal and financial information has been compromised.

The full letter can be read on Blumenthal’s website. His letter asks many questions of Sony, which I am sure we would all like to know the answers to. The only thing that Sony has managed to mention in response to the letter was that they did not know of the actual compromise of information until late Monday evening. Even so, the company should have been a lot more forthcoming with what was going on when the incident happened instead of saying, “We are sorry for the outage. We have no idea what’s happening, or when it will be fixed. Stick around, and we might have more information for you later.”
