In case any of you didn’t know, Square Enix is the latest company on the chopping block for those being hacked. Well, sort of. It’s kind of complicated. Trust us, we’ll do our best to explain it.
Square Enix discovered that a copy of Deus Ex: Human Revolution has been leaked to the net, which spells bad news for the publisher. Now the company is pointing fingers at Valve, as the copy leaked happens to be a copy that they had hosted on Valve’s Steam service. Unfortunately, this happens more than it should. Often time while covering PC games, some companies get early access to copies via Steam, thus a code for the game is sent. In this particular situation, however, hackers were able to obtain an Italian writer’s login information, which led to having the game’s code taken, and eventually leaked.
Valve is now saying that they have more information on those responsible than they have previously released to this point, however Square will need to obtain a subpoena in order to pick it up. This is exactly what the publisher is doing, as they’ve asked the Washington court to hear its case against fifteen unidentified Italian hackers suspected for permission to get the go-ahead. Right now we’re waiting to see what Square picks up from this, and Valve definitely doesn’t want the blame. We’ll have more on this as it surfaces.
