Deus EX: Making The Sound

Most people do not realize how much work goes into the sound effects and musical score in video games, especially in ones set in the future where all the in game weapons don’t exist. For instance in games set in current or close to current times and games set in the past, ambient noise and weapon sounds of that time period are already there. You can go listen to them, record them and use them. However in games set in the future, or games with sci fi weapons. The sounds must be made from almost scratch.

So that’s exactly what was done with Deus Ex; Human revolution. The sound team had to take multiple sounds that currently exist and modify them, add them together to create the sounds for Human Revolution. As for the musical score they used a lot of stringed and percussion instruments to give it a human feel.

If you have ever tried to mix music or sound on the computer you know how challenging their job was. Give the whole documentary a watch, if don’t learn something, you will at least have a greater appreciation for game audio.
