Field trip was a precious word when we were kids. A teacher would notify us that we were going on a field trip in a week and we would all cheer without even knowing where we were headed. Usually it’d be to a factory, or a corn maze, or if you were lucky, a theme park (never happened for me). Just the fact of getting out of the classroom with your friends was an awesome feeling. You didn’t need to worry about school work and you were doing something more interesting than sitting there listening to your teacher drone on and on.
Folks over at Evergreen School took the term ‘field trip’ to a whole new level. They had been working in groups to solve problems in the classroom, so their teachers decided to give them a little treat. The teachers got in contact with VALVe (yes the gaming company) and scheduled a visit to their headquarters.
From the video it looks like the school took about 20 kids and it looks like they all had an awesome time. The kids sat down and worked on building Portal levels. Once they were done building the levels, they could compile these levels and play them immediately. You could tell by their reactions that this amazed most of the kids. All the while, VALVe workers and Portal developers helped the kids along as they needed it. I wish field trips were this cool when I was a kid.
