Civilization 5: Gods & Kings Is Under Development

2K Games announced yesterday in a press release that they are releasing an expansion pack to the popular Sid Meier game, Civilization 5. They are looking to release the game late in the spring of this year.

The expansion pack looks to be pretty epic just from the sheer amount of stuff that they are adding to the game. New technologies are being added, as well as 27 new units, 13 new buildings, and nine new Wonders. Several new Civilizations and Leaders are being added, including Carthage, the Netherlands, the Celts, and the Mayans. New game scenarios will be put into the game as well, and the combat system is being reworked in a way that “places more emphasis on a balanced army composition.” However, probably the biggest thing being added to the game is the use of Religion, which had been in past Civilizations before, but not in Civ 5.

From reading the press release, it sounds like the religion you choose is going to be custom to a certain extent. “(P)layers seek out Faith, choosing a Pantheon of the Gods and creating Great Prophets to found and spread their customized religion across the world.” My guess is that you’ll be able to choose the traits you want in your religion? Another thing to note in the press release is the fact that you’ll be able to set up embassies in foreign countries, and you’ll have the option to employ spies to investigate and/or sabotage your enemies. Overall, it looks like this expansion pack is going to be a huge deal! Hopefully we’ll start seeing some screenshots and videos here soon.
