How fast is your internet? On a good day, I get about 25Mb/s, which isn’t too shabby. On the other side of town there’s a company that offers fiber to the house, which is a blazing 100Mb/s down. However, for those attending The Gathering, a huge LAN event in Norway, even this will seem slow. The event coordinators have announced that they have once again taken their world record title for “fastest internet connection in the world.”
Last year, The Gathering was able to set the record with a blazing 110Gbit/s. This was recently trumped by Dreamhack, which managed a speed of 120Gbit/s. Unhappy about having their title ripped away by the Swedes, those running The Gathering pulled out all of the stops. Utilizing fiber connections, and getting help from Cisco, Huawei and Level 3, they have been able to secure a new world record speed of 200Gbit/s. That’s roughly the internet equivalent of a middle finger being pointed at Dreamhack.
When discussing the announcement, The Gathering’s own Simon Eriksen Valvik said “We have a long tradition of breaking records. With this internet access we write history again. No way we would let the Swedes keep the lead on this, and we didn’t just raise the bar a little, we moved it a story up.”
