God of War: Ascension Has Multiplayer, And Here Are Some Details

The team over at G4TV got a quick preview session with the new God of War: Ascension title, and snagged an inside look at the series’ newest feature: multiplayer. You heard me correctly, Ascension will include a multiplayer mode which has never been seen in the God of War series before. This will certainly change things up more than just a bit.

So far, God of War: Ascension will release with anywhere from five to seven multiplayer maps that will play host to a handful of different multiplayer modes. The mode that was played through the preview was Horde Mode, which is looking to become a norm among multiplayer modes in games as of recent.  Players will move in and out of combat just as easily as Kratos, with rolling and attacking all combining together in a fluid motion. Characters won’t wield Blades of Chaos; rather they will have chains that shoot from their hands, pulling enemies to them for quick attacks. From how it looks, combat will be fast and frantic; much like the God of War series has brought to us through its run.

When I see this, I am somewhat excited, although dismayed. It pains me because it feels like companies are struggling nowadays to toss multiplayer modes into their games in any way possible. The Mass Effect 3 multiplayer was an amazing addition to an already great series. When you get games that are purely single-player, however, it can ruin the series by throwing in a multiplayer mode. Most gamers think that when this happens, core development time is sacrificed, leaving you with a mediocre game that happens to have multiplayer. I hope this isn’t the fate of God of War: Ascension, though we’ll have to wait to learn more about it to make a hardened decision.
