What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “Lord of the Rings”? Is it Gandalf, Sauron, and Gollum trying to destroy the base of Samwise Gamgee and Saruman? If that’s the case, then you’ll be glad to know that there’s a new LotR DOTA clone coming out later this years!
Titled Guardians of Middle-Earth and being developed by Monolith Productions, the game is set to be released in the fall, to tie in with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. While Gandalf, Sauron, and Gollum have all been announced as “iconic guardians” and will be in the game, nobody else of note has been announced as appearing in the game, except that there will be “several new playable guardians” that will be released in conjunction with the film. I wouldn’t be too surprised to see Bilbo Baggins, in that case, using The Ring to slip in and out of enemy lines to wreck havoc.
What’s perhaps most interesting about this game is the fact that it’s set to be released on Xbox Live and the Playstation Network. DOTA and its many clones are usually known for being PC exclusives, and given the genre’s point-and-click nature I’m not sure how well the game might work with a controller. Maybe they intend for the player to control the player directly? We shall see as we get closer to the release date.
