When Starcraft II came out, it drew the ire of many a fan when it was announced that the game would be region locked, meaning that your copy of the game could only play on one server for one region of the world, and you wouldn’t be able to switch. The only thing you could do was to get another copy of the game, with a different account, and select that different region. Overall, it was quite frustrating.
It seems like Blizzard has learned their lesson. In Diablo III, set to come out in less than 2 weeks, you’ll be able to switch regions as many times as you want to. There will be no region lock for Diablo III, meaning if you live in England, and your cousin lives in Japan and you two want to play with each other, you two will be able to select whichever server you want so you can make it happen.
Of course, there will be some limitations. Characters, items, auction house listings, stashes, and friends lists are region specific, so if you decide that you don’t want to play in Europe anymore, and you’d rather slay demons in America, you won’t be able to just move your Barbarian to the new server. However, is that really a big deal that you can’t move your stuff from one server to another? I seem to recall that Diablo II was the same way, where you could choose what server you were on, and your characters stayed on that one server.
