When Diablo III sold 3.5 million copies in the first 24 hours of its release, it set a new record for the fastest selling PC game of all time. That’s why it’s not a shock to hear that Diablo III topped the overall charts for May 2012. At number 2 on the list is another game released on the same May 15th date, Max Payne 3.
While Diablo III did well, the same cannot be said about the hardware side of the spectrum. Compared to May 2011, hardware sales saw a drop by 39%, with the Xbox 360 still remaining the top selling console of the year, at least according to Microsoft. The only console that actually saw a rise in sales from last year was the Nintendo 3DS, which saw a 17% increase from a year ago.
Software sales also dropped a little bit, but that can be attributed to less software launches so far this year compared to last year. Those numbers have dropped by 16%, though had Diablo III not been the huge success that it was those numbers could have fallen further. Here’s hoping that the rest of the year can pick back up a little bit!
