UFC Undisputed 3 Failed To Break Even [E3 2012]

Despite being the third biggest-selling game in February, THQ’s UFC Undisputed 3 failed to break even. According to THQ, they would have needed to sell 2 million copies of the game to break even, let alone make a profit. Instead, only 1.4 million copies were sold, making the game a bit of a bust.

It was due to this performance that THQ decided to sell off the rights to the franchise to rival EA. Designing a video game is an expensive process, and if the game you design doesn’t break even, then what’s the point? It makes perfect sense that THQ sold off the franchise, despite having the exclusive rights for several more years.

In the end, THQ needs to make money, and that means cutting off some of the dead leaves on the tree. That’s why THQ closed the San Diego based studio that the UFC games were developed earlier this week. With that being said, however, there comes a point where you can do too much pruning, and kill the tree outright. How much longer until that happens to THQ?
