It’s been rumored that the next Xbox will come complete with an improved Kinect 2, and an image leaked seems to back up that claim. The image itself is just showing what the Kinect 2 is tracking, so while it may not look like much to the naked eye, from a technical standpoint it’s practically a marvel. The Kinect 2 seems to be able to track individual fingers even if they’re against a person’s body, and in general seems to possess a higher resolution, with the ability to outline a persons clothing.
The source of the image comes the twitter user DaE. While it’s unknown as to how he received such a devkit, Eurogamer did report that he does have an actual devkit for the next Xbox system, codenamed Durango. All that is known is that he has released other images from time to time that show off a bit of the devkit.
So, I’m not going to lie, looking at that image is actually kind of exciting. If the next console is able to basically distinguish fingers from the body, then who knows what kinds of games we’ll be seeing? A new level of control previously unheard of can help change the Kinect from a novelty into something bigger. In fact, I’m thinking of something almost like Minority Report here, and that’s kind of awesome!
