Ubisoft UPlay May Be Adding Third-Party Titles

When it comes to downloading and managing your games and other content, Steam is the undisputed champion. It’s had years to tweak and perfect its design, and by offering its users awesome discounts all the time it’s easy to see that Steam is really a huge cash cow for Valve. It’s no surprise then that many other companies are trying to get their own slice of the pie, including EA’s Origin to GameStop’s (formerly Stardock’s) Impulse.

Now it looks like Ubisoft is trying to make a splash in that market as well with their UPlay client. At this point UPlay only sells Ubisoft PC titles, but according to an article by MCV they are looking into selling third-party titles. Big deal, right? After all, can UPlay really compete with a program like Steam?

Ubisoft thinks it can. According to their director of games Stephanie Perotti the idea is to turn UPlay into something that “goes beyond digital distribution”. However, I don’t think anybody is going to be too impressed until Ubisoft adds more features besides things like a friends list, the direct downloading of games straight from Ubisoft, and a voice chat system. Until I’m given a good incentive I’m not planning of downloading UPlay anytime soon, because I can find the same exact thing through Steam, and quite frankly they have a better overall reputation in my book.
