StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm may not have a definite release date, but we do know of a new feature that will be coming with the game. Coming in the next patch for the Heart of the Swarm beta players will be able to earn XP in order to “level” their accounts. The XP is used to earn portraits and decals for the game, replacing the old system of “Have X amount of wins for a new portrait”.
Each race will have its own XP tree, and the maximum level each tree has is level 20. That means if you want to unlock every single portrait in the game you’ll have to learn and master all three races, and play the game many, many times. Strangely enough, however, there does not seem to be a level tree for Random.
It is possible, however, that if you decide to randomly choose your race in a game you can receive an XP bonus. That’s because Blizzard has confirmed that there will be XP bonuses, including but not limited to a “1st win of the day” bonus, “play with a buddy” bonus, or even possibly a “bonus XP weekend” bonus. However, if you’re in the Heart of the Swarm beta don’t get too attached to the XP you’ve accumulated: Blizzard has stated that as they tweak the system they will be doing XP resets.
