Don’t Expect To See Any Star Wars Movie Tie-In Games, According To EA

You can usually bet that any major blockbuster movie is going to have some half-assed tie-in game. This is a trend that’s been going on almost as long as there has been video games. Some of these games can be decent enough: I seem to recall not hating the Spiderman game that came out when the movie was in theaters. Other games, not so much: remember E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial?

However, if you’re expecting EA to make any cash-grab tie-in games whenever the new Star Wars movies start coming out here in a couple of years you can forget about it. EA chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen told folks during a presentation at the UBS Global Technology Conference that EA won’t be doing a game based on a movie while they are in charge of making Star Wars Games. Jorgensen explains why: “The beauty of the Star Wars franchise is that it’s so broad and so deep, you don’t have to do a movie game, you can do a game that’s very focused on the world that’s been created around Star Wars.”

Of course, it’s very possible that there will be some tie-in video game. While EA has the rights to produce mainstream PC/console Star Wars games, Disney still has the right to make titles in the mobile, tablet, and online categories. But, for the games that really matter, you can be assured that any Star Wars game coming out of EA won’t be some shlock thrown together to make a quick buck off of a movie. Whether it’s any good or not will remain to be seen.
